Welcome
Welcome to the online version of the International Newsletter for former staff and students of the Chinese Language School of Hong Kong.
This site is intended to complement — and compliment — the wonderful work that Mick and Kay have put into publishing the newsletter, in paper between 1996 and 2008 and, with sterling support from Brian Finch, online since then. I am sure all of us welcome the arrival in the mail or email of each new issue. They not only bring back old friends, teachers, and colleagues from the brink of forgotten, but also bring a tingle of astonishment that we (I!) ever went some way toward mastering this deep and beautiful tongue.
With this website, I hope we can not only digitally enshrine the Newsletter for the Ages but perhaps even give it a new lease on life. You can help by contributing news of yourself, pictures, articles, poetry, comments and suggestions in the comment boxes that appear on every page, and ideas for improving the structure, layout, or any other aspect of this site.
Mick remains our eminently worthy Editor-in-Chief, with Kay as Deputy Chief, Brian as Managing Editor Electronic Edition, and me as webmaster. You can email any of us (email addresses are in the Contacts section) directly, or you can leave semi-public messages for us, for each other, for posterity, or just for the heck of it, via the comment boxes. (I say “semi” public because this website is accessible only via user ID and password. It is not accessible to the public nor to search engine “spiders.” Still, I’d be careful about posting anything Top Secret here!)

Many thanks to David for putting this website together. It is a wonderful effort and I welcome the ability to look at the previous issues of the Newsletter online and look forward to further developments. Brian Gopsill (1982-84). briangopsill@hotmail.com
Nicely done. Keep it up.

A ‘Great Leap Forward’ (true progress rather than the disaster of the original!) for which I am all in favour. Grateful to all concerned.

I just caught this comment from “Darrel” (Mason, I presume) that was posted just after the website went live, and before an error occurred that required a change of generic ID and resulted in this comment apparently not transferring to the site under the new ID:

David (and of course Mick and Brian)
Well done and thanks for bringing this into being. I am not a great one for social networking at any level, but I believe this offers a far better way of communicating with those privaleged to have been associated with CLS than e-mails. In order for it to have any longevity, it needs to be more than just a mere depository for regular publications. There is a vast wealth of intellect in the readership that could turn this into a gem.
Organisation changes will no doubt come as you see the different purposes to which it is put.
As to going public. Someone with greater vision than me will have to explain why that should happen now. At the moment I like the idea of a unique ‘club’ but in time I suppose that will have to change.

Thanks for the comment, Darrel, and I very much share your perspective on the potential of this website given the extraordinary knowledge, experience, and intellect of its members. The question is, how to get their active involvement?
Best regards,
David

Dear David
Thank you for all the effort you have clearly put into creating the excellent CLS website. I spent an enjoyable morning reading the various items – it’s also a splendid way of keeping in touch. Can you let me have Mrs Zhong’s and Mrs Chen’s e-mail addresses – I would like to get in touch with them. Regards, Geoff Chadwick.

Hi Geoff,
Thanks for your kind remarks. I have emailed Mick to send you the email addresses — the one thing I don’t have is the email database.
Best,
David
