We have tried to maintain the formatting of the original newsletters here, but not with complete success — some things are out of place. Also, we left off the front and back covers, the Contacts section, and the Where Are They Now? section. For the most part, the text is searchable, including even some of the Chinese character sections (such as the poems). (To accomplish this, we had not just to scan but to “OCR” — optically character recognize — each issue, rather than simply scan each page as a picture. That is why some elements are out of place.)

Those who like me keep an eye on events in Hong Kong will most likely share my concern on reading the announcement from Beijing to coincide with President Xi Jinping’s visit to HK to mark the 20th anniversary of its reversion to Cnina. He made a long speech and later reviewed a vast PLA parade: all this was shown on Yahoo news etc. In the announcement from Beijing which bodes ill for HK , Lu Kang a Foreign Ministry spokesman said ” The Sino-British Joint Declaration, as a historical document, no longer has any practical significance.” So much for the 50-year guarantee of ‘One Country, Two Systems’. Quite right, Alan. I have been keeping a close eye on the higher ed. institutions for signs of threats to academic freedom. The omens are not good.
Alan Robertson adds: after reading of Lu Kang’s statement, I emailed FCO for the attention of Boris Johnson. I suggested that if ever there was good cause for summoning the Chinese Ambassador and making clear to him that HMG deplored such a statement and stood by every clause of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, now was such a time. After some time, I had a long letter from FCO Far Eastern Department. It assured me that HMG stood by all aspects of the Joint Declaration, and the Chinese Ambassador had given his recent word that his government took a similar view, adding that the statement made by MOFA spokesman [Lu Kang] had not been ‘accurate’.
